Job search problems that can be solved

Your job search challenges really come down to 4 problems:

1.        Tough job market

2.        Resume looks like everyone elseโ€™s

3.        Need to reach recruiters

4.        No idea how to begin the job search

Letโ€™s address each of them.

1. The job market is tough. Due to a variety of factors too lengthy to get into here, job seekers are panicking and applying to every job they see. Iโ€™m seeing outrageous application numbers like 500 or 1,000 or 5,000 resumes sent out within days or weeks. This means that, due to the sheer numbers, itโ€™s going to take longer for recruiters and executive recruiters to plow through all the applications. Understand that if the job posting shows you the number of applicants, regardless of how high that number is, 95% of those applicants are unqualified for the job and theyโ€™re just throwing their resume around everywhere and praying that it sticks somewhere. Again, all this means to you is that even if you feel that youโ€™re perfect for the position, youโ€™re going to have to wait a while until you hear back.

2. Your resume looks like everyone elseโ€™s resume. This is a big problem. If youโ€™re relying on skills and experience to get you in the door, youโ€™re going to be disappointed. When I recruit, every resume looks alike, because everyone who does what you do has the same skills and experience that you do (or similar enough). Often, the hiring team cannot tell you apart from anyone else, and thatโ€™s bad for you.

3. Need to reach recruiters. Throughout the job search, I recommend that you network, network, and network. This is where LinkedIn, Alignable, and trade associations come in. However, if your resume only contains your skills and experience, youโ€™re going to look like everyone else in your field who contacted the same recruiters, and it might be a while before they can find a position for you. Why should a recruiter prioritize you over some else if your experience looks exactly the same? As an aside: Claiming poverty and emotional distress does not get you a job faster.

4. No idea how to begin the job search. People come to me confused and feeling overwhelmed, which is expected and understandable if you donโ€™t know what youโ€™re doing and you donโ€™t know how to start to find a new job. People often look like a deer in headlights when I meet them. Also, you might be feeling a little bit of residual stress from how your previous job ended, and that contributes to the problem. The job search can be daunting and scary, especially when you expected to find a job within a few weeks and three months later youโ€™ve made little progress.

In talking to hundreds of jobs seekers (at all levels), and in reading articles about the state of the hiring world, and in communicating with hiring managers, Human Resources leaders, and executive recruiters almost every day, I can tell you that the four problems are real … and they are solvable.

You just need the right advisor.
