On the surface

Have you ever seen a planet through a telescope? It is incredibly amazing because we are seeing God’s creation on yet another level. When I was a boy, I looked through a telescope at Saturn. It was so brilliant and perfectly round with its rings encircling it. I recall in my mind, “That looks just like the picture in a textbook from school.” I saw the surface only and didn’t understand what the make up of Saturn was, the gaseous rings, filled with debris, or the elements that make up that planet and make it appear the way it does.

How often do we only take in the surface of another person? We don’t bother to wonder what circumstances landed them here and right in front of us at that particular point in time. We don’t want to be bothered by another soul that might be in more need than our own.

“I’ve got my own problems,” we might murmur under our breath. Or, “Let God take care of that person.” Well, that could be God implanting His will in you for you to do something for Him. Don’t be fooled by thinking that an opportunity to do His will, bestow grace or mercy on someone else, or simply to just love someone where they are in that moment is someone else’s job.

If you are there and that person is there, God is also there. Looking only at the surface allows us all to miss things much deeper. Looking only at the surface limits our ability to truly see. Looking only at the surface creates a distance that keeps us from helping, aiding, and loving another person who might need it more than we will ever know. Looking only at the surface facilitates the opportunity for us to miss God’s prompting of the Holy Spirit entirely.

So, when you look only at the surface, take a moment to ask God where He is in this thought. He just might prompt you to love on another and that prompting could change the course of a life, maybe even yours!
