Being Humble is Powerful

Humble is mentioned in scripture 57 times, while humility is mentioned 13. That’s 70 times that God mentions this trait. Most times humble is followed by either, himself, herself, yourself, or themselves. It is also used as a noun as in, “the humble.”

In scripture, humility is usually used around words like, gentleness, patience, worship, patience, compassion and kindness. It also says a few times that humility comes before honor. If we desire honor, then pride, accomplishments, and dominance is not the path. Humility must be first and foremost.

Many awards are given in honor of accomplishments in sports, acting, music, and academics. The acts committed may have required sacrifice of one’s self, but was that effort out of humility or out of pride? I don’t know. I do know that the kind of honor God gives is never about us, it is about what we have done for others. This self sacrifice is the foundation of humility. Humility/humble can be defined as freedom from pride and arrogance, and an act of submission.

Being humble is never weak, it is filled with integrity, honesty, and sacrifice. Humility is choosing to be the last, the least, and the one behind the scenes helping, supporting and lifting up others and not ourselves. It is the careful consideration that I am not the best and smartest no matter what my experiences. It is because there is a divine God who is always above us, working, ruling, and controlling everything we think, say, or do. No matter how accomplished we think we are, He is immeasurably above us and sees everything we think, say, or do, before we think, say, or do it. He designed us and therefore controls everything in us. This is why we are to humble ourselves before God as in James and

1 Peter says,

James 4:10 Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.

1 Peter 5:6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you at the proper time,

Remember this throughout your days and you will be honored, even exhalted, before the Almighty who created everything you are and everything you see.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9
