3 Steps to Avoid a 40% Loss in Productivity
Causes of Lost Productivity
According to David Meyer, Ph.D.- ” Even brief mental blocks created by shifting between tasks can cost as much as 40% of someone’s productive time.”
Switching tasks is unproductive. It makes our brain work harder and lose focus.
It takes longer to finish tasks and we make more mistakes. For better results, stick to one task at a time.
Here is my structure to avoid distractions, and stay focused to reach my goals:
-
- I write down on a separate sticky note every task I want to complete that day. I write it in the order of priority. It works best when I do it the night before or the very first thing in the morning.
-
- I stick the note with the first task on my laptop. This serves as a visual reminder in case I find myself mind-wandering.
-
- While I work, I write ANY distraction that tempts me on a notepad. It does not matter if it takes me longer to write the task than to actually do it. My goal is minimum distraction to keep the flow.
-
- It works wonders for me.
