You can’t do it

You can’t do it” is a statement that can plague a mind for an entire life. Believing that one can’t accomplish anything because they are not smart enough, strong enough, or disciplined enough to do it. There is a saying, “If you think you can’t, then you won’t.”

Have you ever thought that the belief that you are not smart, strong, or disciplined enough to do it comes from Satan? If we hear this statement from another, it might be because they see only room at the top for them. It may also be a sign of passionate control of others through fear. It might even be our own self-doubt and lacking belief in our own capabilities. Either way, it’s not from God. Remember that God says time and again to not lean on our own understanding? This can be applied to the understanding of others as well.

In Titus 3:3-7, we are guided with crystal clarity about how we can be smart, strong, and disciplined enough to do it. And what is the “it” in that statement? It’s life!

Titus 3:3-7
3 For we too were once foolish, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another.

4 But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared,

5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we did in righteousness, but in accordance with His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,

6 whom He richly poured out upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior,

7 so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Do you see the past tense in verse 3? It means that the old self is gone. The old self didn’t have the belief in God, his power, and dominion that we also can have access to if we believe. We wallow in self pity, self pain, self-promotion, self accomplishments, and pride. But when Jesus arrived, those beliefs became obsolete by His righteousness to us, in us, and through us. It was a purging of self in exchange for the mercy He has on us, His mercy. By His grace are we able. By his grace, we are made smart, strong, and disciplined .

So, no, “You can’t do it” alone and without God, Christ Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Which also means with God, Christ Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, you can do all things! Put your foolishness behind you as the scripture says and recognize who is really in charge of everything you see. When you do, you will be justified. You will be made an heir. You will have the hope of eternal life with Him.
