Good Deeds
Good deeds
One picture of a good deed is a young man or woman helping an elderly woman cross the street. This has been a scene for decades by a boy scout or just a good-hearted young person helping another with something they need. It remains a peaceful picture of what a good deed can be, a kind gesture, or a gift of love and encouragement given freely to another.
Oswald Chambers said,
“We are not to preach the doing of good things; good deeds are not to be preached, they are to be performed.”
How true. Talk is cheap. Action can be rich and rewarding. What is a good deed to you? Is it helping another in need? Picking up a tab for a friend or a stranger? Opening a door for someone coming out or following you in? Is it mowing a neighbor’s lawn, going to the grocery store for a friend, giving them a ride to church? Is it spending a little time with someone to listen to their situation or experience?
Whatever the good deed, perform it selflessly, generously, and without expectation. You will find the reward you receive is better than any riches this temporal world can give.
Ephesians 4:1-6 details how we can behave in a manner worthy of our calling. Read this passage carefully and understand that who we are is not revealed in what we do. Who we are is revealed by the one true God, to us, in us, and through us. Our obedience to Him reveals our true self. He is all, and we must do our best in every moment to reveal that to others around us.
Scripture References
Ephesians 4:1-6
1 Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called,
2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,
3 being diligent to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you also were called in one hope of your calling;
5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.
