The One Thing
The One Thing
Many people, athletes, successful business folks, academic geniuses, and even children have been characterized or described as having “The One Thing.” It is that ability, skill, or knowledge that sets them apart from so many others. They are incredibly athletic, acute in business, unbelievably smart, or a child prodigy. As a result, they are well known, surrounded by the masses, overly publicized, idolized, and made famous. Sometimes, that fame is a destroyer of souls. The famous begin to believe the lies they’re told or what their critics say. They become disillusioned, despondent, depressed, and even suicidal.
Do believers have “The One Thing?” You better believe it! And that one thing is an extension of God and Christ Jesus. That one thing is The Helper. That one thing leads us, guides us, reveals life situations to us so we can decide what’s best for His kingdom and His glory. The one thing is the Holy Spirit. God’s Holy Spirit was given freely to help bridge gaps in a spiritual life of believers. (John 16:17)
Paul, yes, also Saul, the hunter of Christians and slayer of all believers, was transformed by Christ Jesus directly and was never the same after that. In fact, Paul used all his schooling, training, and worldly education to glorify God as no other soul could. Every disciple of Christ Jesus has “The One Thing,” and Paul provides details of that in 2 Corinthians 2:1-16. Read this passage several times. Pray over it and see the power this thing He freely gives to us yields in each of our lives that aligns us toward others with the love He has for us.
Scripture References
Paul’s Reliance upon the Spirit
1 And when I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come as someone superior in speaking ability or wisdom, as I proclaimed to you the testimony of God. For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. I also was with you in weakness and fear, and in great trembling, and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of mankind, but on the power of God.
Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away; but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory; the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory; but just as it is written:
“THINGS WHICH EYE HAS NOT SEEN AND EAR HAS NOT HEARD,
AND WHICH HAVE NOT ENTERED THE HUMAN HEART,
ALL THAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM.”
For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. For who among people knows the thoughts of a person except the spirit of the person that is in him? So also the thoughts of God no one knows, except the Spirit of God.
Now we have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God. We also speak these things, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.
But a natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. But the one who is spiritual discerns all things, yet he himself is discerned by no one. For WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD, THAT HE WILL INSTRUCT HIM? But we have the mind of Christ.
