Time

It has been said that time is something the evil in mankind developed. When we look around over the centuries and within our own lives, time appears to be an enemy. Not enough time to do this, accomplish that, or pause our very lives to enjoy what’s important rather than being consumed by what’s urgent. Know those two are never the same things. Although, they can align at times.

We read in 2 Peter 3:8b, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. This isn’t to say God doesn’t understand time, He is sovereign over everything, including the past, present, and future of everything. God exists and sees in all times the past, the present, and the future. Imagine what that might look like, to see everything in every time, and all at once. Incredible!

God reveals time frames to us like His creation of heaven and earth. In Genesis 1, the beginning of the world, He so graciously gives us begins. He completes this creation in six days and then rests on the seventh. In 1 Corinthians 15:52 we read, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

The twinkling of an eye is the duration of time it takes light to reach the iris in the eye. This is a fraction of a nanosecond and less time than it takes a microprocessor to process. In other words, it is quick! James 4:14 says, Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. For you are just a vapor that appears for a little while, and then vanishes away.

Faced with these measures of time can be sober reminders that the time we are afforded in this life by God are too precious for words. The truth is no one knows how long they are assigned to be here on this amazingly beautiful world we live today. However, the world that believer’s will inhabit after the evil one has been defeated once and for all, and we return to the new heaven on earth, will be so much more amazingly beautiful. The earth’s beauty today will pale incredibly in comparison.

Knowing our time here on earth is limited and without certainty of when our time here will end, doesn’t it make sense to spend every second, no, every nanosecond, on things He desires, and efforts that will glorify Him? He created it all and then gave it to us all. He then gave His only son to us to live among us so we could see Him here with us. His Son then willingly paid the cost of sin, which is death that we owed, not Him. When thinking of time, think of ways you could spend what you’ve been given on others just like He did for you.
