For or against?

From what perspective do you communicate, discuss, present, or even argue a point? Are you so confident that you focus on  what you are for, or are you so fearful, anxious, and controlling that you present only what you are against? The former can be a service and devotion from love, while the latter can be selfish and prideful.

God’s Word is filled with situations, parables, and conversations from both perspectives. It includes results from a softened heart for God and a hardened heart defiant to God’s sovereignty. You may have experienced or possessed discussions from selfish or prideful perspectives, where both the judge and jury came from the same person. It sounds like this, “If you do this (or that) you are going straight to hell,” or, “Those people making those types of choices won’t be forgiven, they are doomed eternally.” And my favorite, “Your testimony means nothing. You’re dead to me.”

Thank goodness those folks aren’t in charge of our salvation! The perspective they come from isn’t encouraging. The perspective they come from is disappointing, discouraging, and hurtful. It certainly doesn’t communicate the love of God. It communicates mankind’s unforgiveness and worldly futile attempts at the salvation of one another. Christ Jesus, the only example we will ever need, never came from a perspective that was either disappointing, discouraging, or hurtful, and we shouldn’t either.

We are not the judge, He is. We are not sovereign, He is. We are not even supposed to judge unless His righteousness is within us, and without faith in Him, we can’t possess His righteousness. Do you see the difference?

As the saying goes, “You attract more bees with honey than vinegar.” Explaining to someone what you are for versus what you are against is a much more effective way to communicate. If you don’t take the time to understand your audience, invest in their perspective, and serve them first, you may not reach them at all.

We mustn’t come to a conversation with clinched fists but with open hands and arms. Love first. Serve first. Give first. The results of that kind of conversation will be the most powerful and effective of all.
