Discover

Discover means to see something for the first time or to make known or visible, according to Merriam Webster. The truth be known, it is widely misused. I recall a “Seinfeld” episode where George Costanza is asked who his favorite explorer is, and he replies with DeSoto because he discovered the Mississippi River. Jerry replied, “Oh, like they wouldn’t have found it anyway.”

That context is accurate. However, mankind considers themselves discoverers because of their motivation to become famous, published, accoladed, lauded, and applauded. Their pursuit can be birthed by both selfishness and pride. Not all “discoverers” behave this way, but many more do. What is most amazing is that mankind has been the stewards of earth and the life in and on it, and there are untold plants and animals that have yet to be discovered or even become known.

There are unexplored regions on the earth’s land surface and miles and miles under the ocean surface. Because we haven’t discovered them all in over five thousand years or so, including the technology invented to observe them, tells of the vastness of God, the creator of both the heavens and earth. How all powerful, all knowledgeable, and all sovereign over all is He!

Do you know something else that hasn’t been fully discovered? Ourselves, our pain, our suffering, the darkness in which we choose to hide and reside. Do you have yet to show and reveal that to God? He already knows it’s there, where it came from, and why you keep it undiscovered. He knows the pain, the suffering, and the hurt it has caused you. He knows!

When you reveal that or those things, those hurts, to God or to a trusted godly friend, you will discover the freedom that is possible from that pain, suffering, and hurt. You will also discover the power of forgiveness within it to finally be permanently free from it. The blame you have for those who hurt you disappears as well as the blame you have placed upon yourself. Be a spiritual discoverer and discover His eternal freedom!

And this I pray, that your love may overflow still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, so that you may discover the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and blameless for the day of Christ;
