Because I say so

“Because I say so.”

This is a historic and traditional statement. Historic because it seems to have been around for thousands of years and traditional, because I heard my grandparents say it, my parents said it to me, as parents, we’ve said it to our kids, and they’ve said it to their kids. It is often said that  when the recipient hears such a statement, they usually are doing something, behaving in a way, or making a decision that’s not in their own best interest.

God’s Word is filled with the spirit and intent of this statement and usually occurs in moments we should be paying very close attention to what is being said to us. If God, Christ Jesus, or the Holy Spirit says so, guess what? We should do that thing and when and how we are told. Goodness knows, we aren’t the smartest person and what we are being told is from the One who has lived forever, sees forever, and also sees every moment we live this life He has so graciously given. We should listen. We should pay attention. We should behave as He says to behave.

Why should we? Because His ways are infinitely better than our ways. His plans will always be more successful than our plans, and His understanding will always outweigh anything we attempt to understand. Beyond that, He wants what’s best for us. Whereas, we don’t always want what’s best for us. We typically want what we think is best for us now!

It is truly all about love when God says so and our obedience to Him should also be about love for Him, who He is, what He has done for us, and what He does to, in, and through us. He’s already paid the price for us to be free like Him. It’s our move now. It’s our decision. It’s our choice. It’s up to us. Are we choosing to do what He says, or are we choosing to do something else. Understand that anything else we choose is going against His will and what’s best for us. We are choosing death in the face of life whenever we choose not to do as He says.

Ephesians 4:31-32 came up and few times in study and reminds us that God asks us simply, and we are the ones who make answering Him difficult. He is only asking so we can become more like Him,

All bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and slander must be removed from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.

You see, He wants us to get past the pettiness to focus on His kindness, grace, and mercy through compassion and forgiveness. Why would He say so? Because He wants our best and our best becomes less and less like us and more and more like Him.

The fiery furnaces are there by Godโ€™s direct permission. It is misleading to imagine that we are developed in spite of our circumstances; we are developed because of them. It is mastery in circumstances that is needed, not mastery over them.

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
