Saul and Paul
Saul and Paul
Within the New Testament, Scripture reveals two completely different people but within the same person. Saul was the equivalent to a highly trained SEAL, Special Forces, mercenary, assassin, and field and combat soldier. Saul had the education of a modern-day Supreme Court Justice. It could be speculated that Saul lived a lavish life with all the rewards of such successful and expansive knowledge and training. Saul must have beenย prominent in the most powerful circles of that time.
However, a trained killer and educated master, hunted, threatened, jailed, and killed Christians. Saul even approved of the killing of the first martyr, Stephen. Saul approved it because of who Saul was at the time. With that kind of history, he probably had friends, relatives, and even strangers who loved and respected, as well as feared and loathed him. Saul had a solid reputation.
Now Saul approved of putting Stephen to death. And on that day, a great persecution began against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except for the apostles.
Acts 8:1
But Saul began ravaging the church, entering house after house; and he would drag away men and women and put them in prison.
Acts 8:3
Now Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest,
Acts 9:1
However, in Acts 22:1-20, Christ Jesus, our Lord and Savior, came to Saul and spoke to Him, saying directly to Saul, โSaul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?โ Saul didn’t know who it was at first until Christ Jesus revealed Himself to Saul. In the following verses, we read how Christ Jesus blinded Saul and then gave him godly sight. As luck would have it, Saul, now Paul, began to get with them to share the gospel, but they were having none of it because they each knew Saul, and not Paul. Verses 19-31.
Well, we know the rest of the story. Paul used his highly trained and well-educated experience and became the most powerful and influential follower of Christ Jesus. He was beaten, stoned, jailed, and eventually killed for his belief in Christ Jesus, our Savior who saved Saul and transformed him into Paul.
So, faced with this, knowing, or at least reading with thoughtful prayer and meditation, which person are you? Are you Saul or are you Paul? Are you searching for Christians, believers, and followers of Christ Jesus to defeat, destroy, and ensure their destruction? Or are you Paul, a passionate, intentional, and deliberate believer, follower, and disciple of Christ Jesus, the One who saves and can save you from anything and everything this sinful world has impacted and affected you?
Where you choose to go from here is completely up to you. It is your choice who you spend your identity with, the Sauls of this world or the Pauls.ย There are endless examples of both, and we also know one choice is the wide path of many, while the other choice is the narrow path of few.
Saul chose that wide path until Christ Jesus saved his sinful life and transformed him to Paul. Christ Jesus, the same God who transformed Saul to Paul is standing at the door for you. All you have to do is knock, and He will open the door and do the very same for you.ย
