Don
Don
This was a command for just about anything a soldier had to wear, put on, or cover up with, and always before and/or during fierce battle. Being prepared to don whatever proper tool was available to fight back or offensively obtain the upper hand was a daily regimen. Don, the verb means to put on or to wrap oneself in. This came up repeatedly in study, so it bears attention.
The word don is most frequently recalled in Ephesians 6:10-24, the passage called “The Armor of God.” There we are commanded to don the armor of God so that we are able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. If you don’t think the devil is regularly scheming against all that you are, my friend, you are sadly mistaken! That’s all the devil is. That’s all the devil does. That’s all the devil will do until he, the fallen angels, and every soul who disbelieves are all cast into the lake of fire eternally. Revelation 19:20, 20:10, 20:14, and 20:15.
What are we to do in the meantime while the devil and his fallen angels do their very best to cut us out of the herd of believers, separate us from each other, and Christ Jesus Himself? We don the armor of God exactly how He instructs us:
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.
11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.
12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist on the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.
14 Stand firm therefore, having belted your waist with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
15 and having strapped on your feet the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
17 And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18 With every prayer and request, pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be alert with all perseverance and every request for all the saints,
Take special notice that we are told to “be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.” Also notice we are told to “put on” and “take on” and then twice told to “stand firm.” We cannot, will not, or be capable of either being strong in the Lord or standing firm against the schemes of the devil without Him. We can’t bloody do it! In fact, not only that, but without God, nothing close to anything like that is even possible, ever! John 15:5.
Don the Armor of God. Put it on. Take it on. Prepare every moment for the impending battle that is coming. Be ready to stand firm against the devil’s schemes because it is never a matter of if the devil’s schemes cross your path, it’s a matter of when. Will you be ready? Will you be trained up by memorizing His Word in that moment. Will you be victorious in that moment by His strength and His might? Well…will you?
