Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
Proverbs 3:5-6
God deals in absolutes. He does not provide ambiguous statements that blur the lines of right and wrong, good or bad, black or white, nope! He draws clear lines of what is acceptable and what is not. His commands are simple, trust Him and acknowledge Him.
My own understanding comes from my earthly experiences, first hand. It is also what someone else knows from their earthly experiences, what they learned or what another person or persons taught them. These are lessons learned and applied that although can be helpful in this mortal life, they have no significance or application in the hereafter. There lies the clear distinction. If I rely on my own understanding of this world it will do me no good in the next.
God says trust in Him. It is not a question or even a suggestion. He says with all your heart, which we know the heart can be very deceptive with feelings, emotions and hurts. In the next statement He commands we lean not on our own understanding, because we must lean on His.
Acknowledge means to admit the existence or truth of, and to express gratitude or appreciation for or to. He commands we do this in all of our ways, not some, not a few, or based on any condition. God says, “all.”
When we choose to obey, He will bless us by directing the path we should go. He will guide us. He will lead us. He will deliver us from all things outside that path. It is that simple.
When I find myself off the path and stop and look up, it is clear to me that I have chosen to lean on my own understanding and have strayed off course, His course. I am then reminded of Proverbs 3:5 and correct from the path I am on to change direction and follow Him. This is a moment by moment correction, because I’ll stray from His course. I’ve seen me do it!
His ways are drastically better than ours. His understanding and knowledge dwarfs ours to invisibility. His significance is immeasurable, while ours, not so much. With all this disparity, He loves us. He wants to guide us and He wants to protect us. His commands are simple, trust Him and acknowledge Him.
