“The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; Who can understand it? I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, To give to each person according to his ways, according to the results of his deeds. ” Jeremiah 17:9-10
Physical make up of your Heart
The heart is an amazing organ of the human body. From the National Heart, Blood, and Lung Institute, “The heart is an organ about the size of your fist that pumps blood through your body. It is made up of multiple layers of tissue.”
Your heart is at the center of your circulatory system. This system is a network of blood vessels, such as arteries, veins, and capillaries, that carries blood to and from all areas of your body. Your blood carries the oxygen and nutrients that your organs need to work properly. Blood also carries carbon dioxide to your lungs so you can breathe it out. Inside your heart, valves keep blood flowing in the right direction.
Your heart’s electrical system controls the rate and rhythm of your heartbeat. A healthy heart supplies your body with the right amount of blood at the rate needed to work well. If disease or injury weakens your heart, your body’s organs will not receive enough blood to work normally. A problem with the electrical system — or the nervous or endocrine systems, which control your heart rate and blood pressure — can also make it harder for the heart to pump blood.”
To a layman like me, this is very, very complicated. Obviously, the heart is designed by God because there is no way it could be the result of chance, happenstance, or evolution. It was created in its final form. It did not become this after millions of years of morphing as some might believe. This is the physical heart alone, with its valves, aorta, ventricles and veins. Again, all too complicated for me to fully understand. I do however, thank God it works!
Emotional make up of your Heart
The emotional heart is even more complex, and God’s word refers to it hundreds of times from Genesis, where it says God has one too and it grieves, (Genesis 6:6) to Revelation where it is referenced as a part of Babylon and her sin. God knows us infinitely better than we know ourselves, and our heart’s fickle and emotional capabilities.
In scripture, the heart is evil, it deceives, grieves, speaks, is hardened, changes, moves, prompts, stirs, can be obstinate, burns with fire, turns away, is cheerful, devoted, both wise and wicked, can align with other hearts, is sick, and bitter. The heart can hold idols, be both divided and undivided, perfect, prideful, tender, sad, faithful, mighty, wishful. It faints, sings for joy, is joyful, willing, tranquil, cheerful, trembles, complies, rejoices, rejects, rebukes, condemns, is glad, does not fear, and trusts. The heart lives forever because it belongs to God.
The physical attributes of the heart are finite, while the emotions of the heart appear infinite. This is undoubtedly God’s creation. We are to guard it, submit it to its Creator to purify it, and use it for what He initially created it to be. It is not truly ours. It is His and He asks us repeatedly to submit it to Him, love Him with our whole heart and leave it all to Him. Who better to care for it than its creator?
He is greater than our heart, as infinite as it might be. It pleases Him when we love Him fully with it. He loves you through it and will make you His with it. Won’t you obey His call and give your heart to Him above all else?
