Give up
Give up
What picture do these words paint in your mind? Quiting? Stopping before the end? Unfinished? Broken? Incomplete? When we hear give up most often, there is a sigh of relief and a feeling of defeat all at once. We gave up the fight. We had to give up because we couldn’t finish the fight, the job, the task, or the solution. The notion of giving up has been hijacked as something bad and should not be done.
However, what if you give up something for someone else? What if you give of your time, talents, and treasures to someone less fortunate, to someone you knew didn’t deserve it, or even someone who hurt you very, very, badly? What about giving up something, anything, or everything for them?
What if another gives of their time, talents, and treasures for you, and they know you don’t deserve it? What about that? What do you do with that generosity? Christ Jesus does this all the time because He is our Savior. Jesus saves! He doesn’t withhold his time, talents, and treasures because of our sinful nature. Why? Because He loves us. Christ Jesus truly loves us and desires only our best for Him and every soul around us.
To give up something for another isn’t defeat. It is the same grace and mercy we receive from our Savior. It is the same reward they (and we) did nothing to deserve. In fact, we have done things to deliberately not earn that grace and mercy, yet Christ Jesus gives them up for us anyway.
Don’t you see that we, too, must emulate, imitate, and reflect that giving up just like He does? Can’t you see the fruit in giving up of ourselves for any other? That isn’t quitting. That isn’t stopping. That isn’t unfinished, broken, or incomplete. No, our giving up of ourselves for Him is His will for our lives. It is victory in Christ Jesus!
What will you give up for Christ, your time, your talents, your treasures? What will you give up for an enemy, hatred, unforgiveness, or anger? You will be set free from it. You will be purged of it. You will be stronger as a result of it. Give up that something that has burdened you for a while. Give it up for Christ Jesus today.
