Do you cry?

“Big boys don’t cry,” or “Men don’t cry” were statements told to me when I was young and during much of my life. As a result, I did my best to remain emotionless when crying was most appropriate. Recalling those days, not crying took an effort as if it was going against something, unnatural. There was certainly no release or payoff from holding emotions within. It came to do more harm than good.

What scripture says

Scripture mentions the words “cry,” “cried,” “cries,” or “wept” around 300 times. From that, we can gather that God’s people cry. We would be in great company because Christ Jesus also cried. Throughout scripture we see cries for help (a lot!), cries of victory, cries of defeat, war cries, cries of violence, cries of the poor and afflicted, cries to God and many more!

The word that most frequently follows cry, cries, or cried is “out.” We are to cry out to the Lord audibly and at times loudly. God commands us to cry out. Crying is healthy. Crying is an important part of healing. Crying can be from laughter and experiences that are overwhelmed by blessings from God. So, when that emotional feeling to cry comes upon you, go ahead and cry. Because to cry is to be like our Savior, Christ Jesus.
