Next Steps

Next steps

“Next steps” is a term used in business and in a multitude of ways. There are “next steps” in a project when one is responsible for ongoing results to an ultimate end or solution. There are “next steps” in a medical process of treatment, therapy, or healing. “Next steps” in the recruiting process, meaning what comes next that ultimately results in a hire.

The next step can also mean what, where, when, why, and how we take ours. When we are in the dark, we feel around to find the safest next step. We can look down or even wait until our eyes adjust to the lack of light or even peripherally see in darkness. Some folks may freeze up entirely and not bother to take the next step.

In the spiritual sense, and when we are called, we will negotiate ourselves out of taking “Next steps.” We can say, “God can’t use a failure like me,” or, “I am of no value to be used by the almighty God,” and sometimes we can reason, “Let someone else do it. Let God use them!” This reasoning is wrong-headed because God can and will use anyone who is willing to be used. Christ Jesus used fishermen, harlots, despised tax collectors, roman soldiers, and even a convicted felon who also was hung on a tree to die along with Christ Jesus.

“Nest steps” are available each day and throughout the day. All we need to be is willing. We must be willing to say, “I’m here,” when God asks, “Where are you?” We must be willing to be used and ask God each day and throughout the day by repeating it in every circumstance, “Use me, Lord, use me!” We will find that being used is easier than we think and more impactful than we ever imagined. For the work we will accomplish through His “next steps” are not of us so we cannot boast (1 Corinthians 1:29, Galations 6:14, Ephesians 2:9), but it is of God in us, to us, and through us, to, in, and through others.

When we refuse to be used by God, shying away with false mental reasoning, we miss the opportunity to reveal Him to others. For example, if someone you know needs prayer, and truly that’s every soul that’s ever lived, don’t say, “Hey, I’ll be sure and pray for you.” No, stop whatever busyness is in front of you and say, “Hey, would it be okay if we prayed over this right now?” Almost every soul alive today won’t resist the power of God like that. That right there is a “next step.”

Daily prayer, scripture reading, verse memorization, becoming a member within a local church body, attending or even leading a small group, are all “next steps” that take just a single step at first. Before we know it, our path will be brightened by God and allowing us to take more steps for Him and toward Him. With that being the clear result, what are your next steps?

Would you be willing to say, “Lord, I don’t have much to offer. But what I have, Lord, I offer to You”? If you are willing to say that, then watch what God will do.
-Greg Laurie

Prayer will make a man cease from sin, or sin will entice a man to cease from prayer.
John Bunyan
