When someone has the desire to bestow a gift upon you, what do you say? What do you do? Most folks will say, “No, thank you. You don’t have to do anything for me,” or, “Don’t bother yourself. It’s too much trouble. I’m okay.” They wave their hands or shake their heads signifying, no. Others might say, “Of course, thanks. What took you so long!” The best response is somewhere in the middle.
You see, when you want to give someone something or do something for them, your desire is to bless them, make them happy, and be a blessing to them. If we say, “No thank you. You don’t have to do anything for me,” or, “Don’t bother yourself. It’s too much trouble. I’m okay,” we are stealing their blessing. Saying, “No, I am okay,” puts the focus on you, and the focus at that moment must be on the one who is doing the blessing.
We can certainly protest, and we must mean it. However, if another person is passionate about doing something for us or giving something to us, we mustn’t steal their blessing, diminish it, or devalue it. Why? Because that is hurtful to them and ultimately to us to refuse their honest and sincere generosity.
Like the second and even a bit selfish response, we must also thank the one doing the blessing, sincerely, honestly, and lovingly. This reaction of love blesses all involved and even those around you. You are being thankful from the heart, and that is powerful. Just as we should behave this way toward our fellow man, we most certainly must also behave with God, Christ Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.
They give us gifts we can’t possibly possess without them. God created this world, then us, and gave the world He created to us, to live in it and be good stewards of it. Christ Jesus gave his sinless mortal life for ours so we could spend eternity with Him by our faith in Him. From Him, we also received the Holy Spirit for guidance, assistance, and help along this journey. He keeps us.
Many more folks will choose not to receive His gifts than those that do. To a believer who knows God, trusts God, and loves God, this makes no sense. Just like an unbeliever that sees us trust in the unseen makes no sense to them. Believers also understand that without God, nothing is possible, and with Him, all things are possible (Matthew 19:26), any trial we face, every situation and circumstance we encounter, and especially the salvation of the lost.
Willingly receive the gifts God has for you from Him directly and those gifts through others. Be gracious, humble, and thankful because to receive a blessing, you could be receiving a godly demonstration of thankfulness for others who need it even more than you.
Scripture References
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?
Roman’s 8:31-32
