What benchmarks are you using to measure your success?
Measurement matters
Good morning, everyone. It’s Sal Celly. Hope you all are doing great. It was a busy week for me. I was traveling in Nashville with a number of client meetings and events and just got back into Austin. It was a hectic and very productive trip-just the way I want my business trips to be. I want to talk a little about expectations and yardsticks of measurement of success.
To lay the context, I want to quote something that Albert Einstein said which is very relevant. He said- “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish, by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” Let’s unravel this insightful quote by Albert Einstein.
Success Benchmarks
The first thing is- what yardstick are you using to judge success? A fish swims in water. But if you’re judging it by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid, because it cannot climb the tree. Similarly, if we are being judged by certain benchmarks and traditional yardsticks that are not relevant for us, then we may get down on ourselves and think and feel that we are failing.
In reality, you should not necessarily measure yourself against external benchmarks, but more importantly, internal value-based measurement metrics. Are you getting better than what you were yesterday? Are you leading with compassion and wisdom? Are you empowering people to become better versions of themselves? Do you have an abundance mindset or a scarcity mindset? Do you uplift others instead of constricting them? Are you using your spiritual gifts? Are you living your life the way God meant you to live? Are you helping others in their journey?
External versus Internal Benchmarks
Those are fundamental and more useful measures of success to evaluate yourself against. When you have that viewpoint, you will be able to prioritize in the right avenues and areas that truly count and move the dial. Don’t get so fixated on external, traditional benchmarks and yardsticks of success that the world has utilized for decades, as those are temporary, inconsistent, and fleeting at best. They’re like empty cisterns that overpromise and underdeliver.
On the contrary, when you live your life based on more truthful and permanent aspects that truly matter and make a difference, that’s when you can prioritize accordingly and make true and lasting progress. I wanted to do this quick blog on internal benchmarks versus external yardsticks of measurement, and where you should be investing your time.
