Control
Control
Simply defined, control means to exercise restraint or conduct; to have power over; conduct. How many of us require, no, demand control? Oh, how we allow our overwhelming desire for control to negatively impact our experiences and relationships!
Some don’t take trips of lifetimes because they are unwilling to relinquish control to a highly trained pilot flying a reliable aircraft to travel across the globe. Others won’t go places because they can’t control another person, place, or thing. Still, others don’t have relationships with those they can’t control.
The reality is, ever since birth, we are all approaching death, and that is something none of us can control. Of course, we can take care of our physical health well enough through diet, exercise, training our minds up and doing whatever we can, but death remains eminently close. We never know when our perceived control will run out.
Here’s an idea: Why don’t we focus on controlling our obedience to God’s control? Why not look to Him and His control of all things to control us through obedience, surrender, humility, and trust?
Whenever the controls of an aircraft get out of sync, the pilot goes immediately to their training, their experience, and what they learned in flight school. They go to the foundation of knowledge. What do you do when you lose control? What is the training you lean on or go to? What foundation of knowledge do you resource to regain control?
The only control we need to submit to as a guide, a help, and a hope in escaping the lack of control this life regularly and repeatedly demonstrates is God’s control, Christ Jesus’ control, and the control of the Holy Spirit.
God’s Word is the supreme training manual to remain under the peaceful control of God. It’s never about us and our concern for control. It must always be about Him and His sovereignty that controls every aspect of every soul that has ever breathed a breath. Whether it’s “Jesus take the wheel”, “Let go and let God”, or any other term you prefer, this is surrendering our perceived control to His ultimate power and rule that controls us in every facet of our lives to bring Him glory and praise.
He does all things well. Us, and on our own, not so much! Therefore, lean on Him, His word, His strength, His will, and His control. Doing that removes your prideful need of control, trust on your terms, and all the anxiety that comes with that. Relinquish the desire to maintain your own control and all the stressors that accompany that behavior and receive the power and control of God the Father who is over all things, all things!ย
Scripture References
For the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died; and He died for all, so that those who live would no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose on their behalf.
2 Corinthians 5:14-15
