Greatness lies on the other side of Fear

Hi everyone, its Sal Celly. Hope you all are doing great. Today I want to discuss the importance of overcoming your fear. Greatness lies on the other side of fear. Anything that you’re going to achieve and be proud of requires you to beat your fear. For a transformational shift or a paradigm shift in how you’ve been doing till this point, and what you will do moving forward, is you must overcome your fear. Nothing worth achieving was achieved without some risk.

Take calculated Risks

I’m not saying that you bet the whole farm in Vegas on a slot machine, no. But you’re going to have to take calculated risks and overcome your fear, to continue to move forward. Otherwise, you’re going to be stuck due to inertia. This is equally relevant in your personal life as in your work life. Sometimes, we as human beings are risk averse, and we get comfortable. When we do that, we tend to continue in the same path and on the same track that we were in- it’s inertia. A body in motion stays in motion, and a body at rest stays at rest.

Do something different

In order to make jumps, and grow exponentially rather than linearly, you have to do something different. That requires you to break the pattern that you’re on. That is scary because you’re not sure of the outcome-you’re not sure of what’s going to happen. You’re afraid of the unknown-what happens if it doesn’t work, so on and so forth. But the key here is, to overcome your fear and take the plunge and build your wings on the way down. That’s really important.

You can do it

Yesterday, I was at a company get together and I was talking to an inside salesperson Joe, who had been doing that role for five years. I asked Joe, what was it that he wants to do? Joe had a number of things in his mind. I asked him, “How about going out to the field and being an outside salesperson.” Joe said, “Wow, that’s scary, because it’s new, it will be a new territory, it will be a new city. And you got to know the whole portfolio. And I don’t know-it’ll be new accounts and no definite guarantees of success.”. Of course, Joe was scared.

After speaking with Joe for a while, I told him that he can do it. I talked to him about how other people in his similar situation did it and have been successful. He was a single person, and he didn’t have any kids. And it’s a lot easier when you’re single. I walked him through the risk reward ratio for him taking the plunge. You evaluate the pros, and the cons, of the new path. Of course, there’s uncertainty-will it be successful? Yes, you will be successful, if you put in the hard work.  There are no guarantees in life, but you still need to take the plunge.

As a result of my conversation with him, Joe felt a lot better. And he thanked me for that. I also told him that I was happy to talk to him further. Sometimes we need to talk to trustworthy folks that have done it before us. We need to ask them and be open about it and acknowledge the fear and talk to them about what you’re fearful for. You can write it down. When you write it down, you bring it out of your head, and you put it on paper. You can then objectively look at the pros and the cons, the upside and the downside, and take a calculated call and act on it.

Seek wise counsel

Discuss it with somebody.  overcome your fear and take the plunge. Have faith in yourself. Have faith in God and pray about it. Remember, greatness lies on the other side of fear. Anybody and everybody that has been successful, has taken a calculated risk. It may not work, but it may work as well. So, what do you have to lose? You can always come back and do what you were doing before, but at least you have tried. You’ve taken the shot. You may miss some of the shots, but that’s okay. You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. To overcome your fear, push beyond the fear, and then you’re going to get to a much better situation. This is equally relevant in your personal life, as in your work life.

Seize the opportunity

Seize the opportunity and go for it. If everything is 100% guaranteed, then you’re not pushing yourself further. You’re not expanding your zone of possibility and you’re not stepping outside your comfort zone-when you do, good things will happen.
