A Father’s Compassion
Mothers have a relationship with their children that is unique. It seems that after some children are born, they continuously try to get back into their mother’s womb! There is a physiological closeness that fathers don’t experience with their children.
However, fathers have a uniqueness towards their children that mothers do not, and that is compassion. Compassion can be defined as a deep awareness of the suffering of another accompanied by the wish to relieve it. It also means pity. Fathers have the ability to emulate compassion, demonstrate compassion, and teach compassion to their children, and fathers do this best. Compassion is mentioned 100 times in scripture, so it is definitely something to understand well.
For example:
Psalm 103:13
Just as a father has compassion on his children, So the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him.
Mark 6:34
When Jesus went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and He felt compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things.
Luke 10:33
โBut a Samaritan who was on a journey came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion,
Luke 15:20
โSo he set out and came to his father. But when he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him and ran and embraced him and kissed him.
Luke 10:37
And he said, โThe one who showed compassion to him.โ Then Jesus said to him, โGo and do the same.โ
And in Matthew 20:34 and Mark 1:41 it says Christ Jesus was “moved with compassion.”
There are so many different examples of compassion demonstrated in the bible. Compassion from the good Samaritan, the compassion from the father of the prodigal son, God’s compassion for Moses, the compassion Christ Jesus has on the people and then He heals them. Compassion is spurred by the actions of another and then requires action, a godly response from ourselves.
As fathers, knowing this, understanding this, and then acting on this is crucial to the fortification of our children and our world. Statistics have clearly shown the degradation of our society globally, can all be traced back to a fatherless home. Prison populations are dominated with this demographic. Most crimes committed are by kids and adults that had no father or father figure in their lives.
Being a father and behaving fatherly is a tall task and should not be taken lightly. No matter how our kids behave, we know we could have and should have done better. But through God’s repeated examples, through the behavior of others in scripture, and by the powerful and repeated demonstration of compassion toward us by Christ Jesus, we see clearly the godly impact.
Be the love you have been shown. Follow the examples our heavenly Father has so vividly provided in others and be the compassionate one that Christ Jesus is. Demonstrate that fatherly compassion in the lives of your children, to your sphere of influence, and toward everyone you meet everywhere. This one action can change another’s life for the better in an instant.๐
