Good morning, everyone. Hope you all are doing well. It is first of April, April Fool’s Day. And it’s about 7:25am. It’s a beautiful day, beautiful spring day in Austin, and I’m sitting in my backyard garden. In my background, there is a pear tree. We are looking forward to getting a nice big harvest of some pears this summer. So today, I want to write about a very important topic-are you being bold. What do I mean by that?
What does being Bold mean
Many times in life, we don’t get what we want, because we’re not bold enough. And we’re not forward enough to ask for what we want. When you don’t ask for what you want, and you’re not bold, and you’re not confident in your stance, then you don’t get it. Wayne Gretzky said, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.
You don’t need to be bold all the time, you just need to be bold for a few seconds. When you are in front of the investor, or when you are in front of the promoter, or when you are in front of the CEO of the company, or you’re in front of the large customer, you just need to get that courage for a few seconds. Your brain is going to convince you not to be bold, after the few seconds have elapsed. So it’s like a pattern interrupt for a few seconds, you defy logic and you go and do what your heart tells you and you be bold for that short period of time.
Impact of being Bold
So what would the impact of being bold-there’s a distinct possibility that if you have laid out your arguments well, you have built a strong case and you make the ask, you will receive what you ask for when you have been bold. Knock on the door, and the door shall be opened, right? But if you are not going to ask, or if you ask in the wrong way, or you ask in the right way, without the right arguments and the case and the supporting evidence, then you may not receive it.
But you know what? Every No brings you closer to the Yes. So go ahead and make the ask. One, you have to believe in being bold. You must have strong convictions, you have to have integrity. And that comes across when you make the ask. The same applies in your personal life, as in your work life. If you’re looking for the next step in your job, in your career, at the same company or a different company, make the ask. If you need somebody to make an introduction for you, make the ask. If you need somebody to do you a favor, be bold and make the ask.
They’re not a mind reader, so be bold and make the ask. If you’re having a tough situation and you need some help, ask for the help. The worst thing that the person can say is no. And that’s okay. Every no gets you closer to the Yes. So don’t be afraid of the No. And if you make the ask, it’s possible that you get a yes.
I’ve seen so many people be afraid and let self-doubt come in the way. And that stops you from being bold that stops you from having conviction. You can hear the car racer in the background racing down the street in my neighborhood. He’s being bold right now, but to be bold bold in a foolish way. You don’t want to do that. You want to be bold in the right way.
Be bold and make the ask
The same applies when you’re in a conflict. When you’re in a situation where the other person is not understanding or not agreeing or not seeing eye to eye with you, you need to be bold and state your argument. Or you’re in a tough negotiation, make the ask or if you’re trying to sell your home. Make the ask in terms of what you want and when you want it to be closed, etc. Or if you’re buying a car or you’re buying something valuable. Make the ask in terms of the price. It eliminates a lot of back and forth and a lot of guessing and assuming when you come out and make the ask. So, go ahead and do that and let me know how it goes.
Now remember, you always make the ask with humility, with grace and with respect. Never do it in the wrong way. But when you do it in the right way and you pray about it, and are bold and take action, good things happen. When you are bold, you will get what you want, as long as you are willing to put in the effort and work. Once you do that, your impact and productivity will increase, your mental wellbeing and health will improve and you will feel more in control and more balanced and happier.
