Follow Him

I am the Light of the World: He who follows me will not walk in darkness, But will have the light of Life. John 8:12

Jesus said, “Follow me” at least 22 times in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. As we know, when something is repeated in scripture, we should pay attention to it.

Follow is defined as:
To come or go after; proceed behind; to go after in pursuit; to keep under surveillance.

A powerful memory verse is Luke 9:23-24, And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it.

In following Christ Jesus, we are to go after, pursue, and even watch what He does. We are to walk where He does. Speak as He does. Forgive as He does. Give the grace, mercy, and hope to others as He does. We are to love as he does.

How do we accomplish this? Well, we can’t follow someone by walking ahead of them and putting ourselves (our selfs) first. We must take up and follow Him, daily. I would say even moment by moment we must follow Him. In every circumstance, every experience, and every decision we make.

We know we cannot save ourselves, only Christ Jesus can do that. Knowing that, why are we so reluctant to let Him each and every day we are gifted another amazingly beautiful day on this earth? Not every day will be fun and without difficulty. However, isn’t it better when we are following Christ Jesus, as He asked the disciples time and again, rather than relying on our own ability?

I do my best to follow Him. Not because I know it is right and not because I think it will benefit me. I follow Him because He has asked me to follow Him.
