Feed your Brain with Good stuff
Last week we talked about our Habits of Mind – and how they can work for us or against us.
You know those negative pesky voices of self-doubt that can become debilitating if we’re not careful.
This week, let’s take that one step further and start to notice…
What are you feeding your brain?
There are two parts to this, of course!
The food you’re actually consuming every day, as well as the books, podcasts, news, or social media that you’re taking in each day as well.
What you take into your body and mind matters!
Eating nutritious food feeds your body and brain, keeping you healthy, alert and functioning on all cylinders.
Consuming healthy media also has a major impact on your well-being and state of mind.
Did you know that it only takes your body milliseconds to negatively react to outside stimuli, spiking the stress hormone cortisol in your bloodstream?
Yet, it takes several HOURS for your cortisol level to return to normal!
And, if you’re dealing with chronic or prolonged stress, it can take WEEKS OR MONTHS for your system to regulate properly again.
While there are positive things happening in the world, we mostly only hear about the chaos and negativity happening thanks to sensationalized media that is fueled by the need for more views.
So what does watching stressful news regularly do to your body and mind?
You guessed it!
It creates a constant state of stress and cortisol in your body which negatively impacts your physiology (lowering your immune system, raising your blood pressure) and can also lead to depression, anxiety or any number of physical ailments.
So you can see how important it is not only to mind your thoughts, keeping those negative voices quiet, but it’s also vital to your health to not feed that negative internal dialogue with negative news and doom-scrolling on social media.
Do yourself a favor, find positive sources of news, social media, books, and podcasts that inspire you and your life. Your body will thank you!
